MB-E5700 Battery Pack Issue - Updated 5-31-03

Just wanted to pass along some info in regard to the external battery pack (MB-E5700) for the Nikon CP-5700 which I recently discovered, which can be an issue with battery construction compatibility. The problem exists with the battery slot furthest away from the end flange closure mechanism. Initially, I though the tab as pointed to below was thicker than the material adjacent to the other slots.

This however is really not the case, based upon further close inspection under better lighting conditions. The confusion was caused by the chamfered edge of the inner slots as shown below.

This does not change the fact that there is a problem with certain batteries making contact when installed in this slot. In my specific instance, the problem is with Maha Powerex 1800 mAh NiMH batteries not making contact with the metal connector strip in this slot. Curiously, this isn't a problem on the outermost slot next to the flange on the tray. I have other batteries which work in this slot, so at this moment, I have a work around. I hope to be able to make some detailed measurements soon to add further insight to this problem. The bottom line is for a battery holder costing over U$ 120, this is ridiculous.

Spent 10+ frustrating minutes on the phone last night with Nikon Tech Support for the CP-5700 who are totally unaware of any problem or issue with the MB-E5700, even when read an e-mail reply sent to someone else with the problem acknowledging the issue and offering replacement. What a way to run a railroad!

After being contacted by a fellow user experiencing this problem and having gotten a replacement from Nikon Tech Support I eventually got Tech Support to admit there is somewhat of what I would call a quiet recall. I say that because on the person I called on the phone at the Tech Support number had no knowledge of this. However, an e-mail to tech support, anonymously quoting the reply they gave to this other user which lead to his getting a replacement, eventually lead to a similar offer to replace mine.

I needed the battery grip for an outing, so it was a bit over a week before I was able to send it off. I received the replacement in about a week and it functions as it should. All my high capacity batteries make contact in the outer most battery position now.
