The Walk From Redoubts 9 & 10 Down to the Dam at Wormley Pond

.
Beginning at Redoubt 10 overlooking the mouth of the York River as it empties into the Chesapeake Bay in the background.

Oops, sometime the volunteers don't pay attention and a flag gets flown upside down.

Here's Klaus atop the Communicating Trench near Redoubts 9 and 10, with the mouth of the York River in the background. The parking lot near Redoubts 9 and 10, off of Moorehouse Road offers a nice starting point for walks down the tour road to the earthen dam on Wormley Pond. Around dusk herds of deer, sometimes approaching several hundred in number, may be seen in the fields on either side of the tour road.

In the fields on both sides of the tour road one may see herds of deer grazing or just lying in the grass, especially at dusk.

Klaus loves swimming in Wormley Pond just off the shore of the earthen dam, especially during the hot summer months. A swan is swimming over to greet him, while the geese remain in the background. The tour road, coming down the grade from the Gathering, is seen in the upper right. Bluegill can be seen swimming off the shore and near the spillway for the dam. On several evenings, we've watched one of the local beavers swim around and frolic for 20-30 minutes at a time.

Here's a pair of geese and their somewhat grown goslings. We were able to follow their growth and development, after initially finding them as tiny babies swimming with their parents in the pond by the beaver dam.

Please see my digital photography site for many new photos taken around Wormley Pond. Be sure to check the Wide Angle, Telephoto and fish eye pages. I've copied the one panoramic image around Wormley Pond Panoramic Page below as an enticement to make the additional effort.
